Lemosho Route – 8 Days
Day 1 – Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Your Lemosho Route – 8 Days adventure begins with a drive to Londorossi Gate for registration before continuing to the trailhead on Kilimanjaro’s western side. The trek starts through untouched rainforest rich with birdlife, towering trees, and dense vegetation. This quieter route offers a peaceful introduction to the mountain with fewer climbers and excellent scenery throughout the day. Your guide maintains a steady pace while sharing insight about the mountain environment and surrounding ecosystem. After several hours of hiking, you arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp for dinner and overnight in the rainforest.
Day 2 – Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
After breakfast, the climb continues as the rainforest gradually gives way to heath and moorland landscapes. The trail becomes steeper while offering increasingly impressive views across the Shira Plateau and surrounding valleys. Giant heathers, volcanic rock formations, and open mountain scenery dominate the landscape as you gain altitude. The route provides a peaceful and scenic trekking experience with excellent opportunities for photography. In the afternoon, you arrive at Shira 1 Camp where you can relax, enjoy dinner, and experience your first night in the open alpine environment.
Day 3 – Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Today’s hike is shorter and designed to support gradual acclimatization while crossing the beautiful Shira Plateau. The route offers spectacular panoramic views of Kibo Peak, Mount Meru, and the surrounding high-altitude landscapes. The terrain is more open and gentle, allowing time to enjoy the scenery and adapt comfortably to the altitude. Along the way, your guide explains the volcanic history and unique ecosystems found on Mount Kilimanjaro. By afternoon, you arrive at Shira 2 Camp where dinner and overnight take place surrounded by impressive mountain views.
Day 4 – Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
This important acclimatization day climbs toward Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp. The ascent reaches high altitude and allows the body to adjust gradually to thinner air. The scenery becomes dramatic with rocky volcanic formations and sweeping views across the mountain. After lunch near Lava Tower, the trail descends into the scenic Barranco Valley known for its giant groundsels and rugged cliffs. The famous Barranco Wall rises nearby, creating one of Kilimanjaro’s most iconic landscapes. Dinner and overnight are at Barranco Camp surrounded by unforgettable alpine scenery.
Day 5 – Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day begins with the climb up the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but rewarding section requiring light scrambling in some areas. From the top, panoramic views stretch across glaciers, valleys, and distant mountain ridges. The trail continues through rolling terrain and alpine valleys while maintaining a gradual pace suitable for acclimatization. Compared to previous days, the trek is shorter, allowing additional rest before the summit push. In the afternoon, you arrive at Karanga Camp where you enjoy dinner, relaxation, and preparation for the higher sections of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Day 6 – Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After breakfast, the route continues steadily toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before summit night. The landscape becomes increasingly rocky and barren as vegetation disappears and the alpine desert environment dominates the scenery. The trail offers spectacular views of Kibo Peak and nearby glaciers while the altitude becomes more noticeable. Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, climbers rest, organize summit equipment, and receive a briefing from the guides regarding the midnight ascent. An early dinner is served before everyone prepares for a few hours of sleep ahead of summit day.
Day 7 – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Around midnight, the summit ascent begins beneath the stars as climbers slowly make their way toward Stella Point on the crater rim. The climb is physically demanding, but reaching the rim rewards you with breathtaking sunrise views across Africa. From Stella Point, the route continues to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point on the African continent. After photos and celebration at the summit, the descent begins back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp. Dinner and overnight follow after an unforgettable summit achievement.
Day 8 – Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
After breakfast, the final descent continues through lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro provide a final opportunity to enjoy tropical vegetation, birds, and forest scenery after several days in alpine environments. Upon arrival at the gate, successful climbers receive their summit certificates before meeting the transfer vehicle. The journey concludes with a drive back to Moshi or Arusha where you can relax, celebrate your successful climb, and reflect on the incredible experience of reaching the Roof of Africa via the scenic Lemosho Route.
