Machame Route – 7 Days

Day 1 – Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Your Machame Route – 7 Days adventure begins with a drive to Machame Gate where registration and briefing take place before the climb starts. The trail passes through dense rainforest filled with giant trees, tropical vegetation, and abundant birdlife. The path can be muddy and humid, but the forest scenery creates a beautiful introduction to Mount Kilimanjaro. Along the way, your guide explains the mountain environment and local ecosystems while maintaining a comfortable pace. After several hours of trekking, you arrive at Machame Camp for dinner and overnight surrounded by rainforest atmosphere.

Day 2 – Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After breakfast, the route continues through the forest before gradually entering the heath and moorland zone. The scenery changes dramatically as giant lobelias and volcanic rock formations become more common. As the trail climbs higher, impressive views of Mount Meru and the surrounding landscapes begin to appear. The hike is steeper than the previous day but rewarding with constantly changing scenery. By afternoon, you reach Shira Camp located on the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic regions. Dinner and overnight are at the camp beneath expansive mountain views.

Day 3 – Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Today focuses on acclimatization as the route climbs toward Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp. The ascent to Lava Tower reaches high altitude and allows the body to adjust gradually to thinner air. The landscape becomes more rugged and dramatic with volcanic rock formations dominating the scenery. After lunch near Lava Tower, the trail descends into the beautiful Barranco Valley surrounded by giant groundsels and towering cliffs. The famous Barranco Wall stands nearby, creating one of the most iconic views on the mountain. Dinner and overnight are at Barranco Camp.

Day 4 – Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

The day begins with the climb up the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable section that offers spectacular panoramic views across the mountain. Although some scrambling is required, the route is safe and guided carefully by the mountain crew. After reaching the top, the trail continues through valleys and ridges with impressive scenery throughout the journey. The hike is shorter, allowing more time for rest and acclimatization. In the afternoon, you arrive at Karanga Camp where you enjoy dinner, relaxation, and preparation for the higher elevations ahead.

Day 5 – Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Today the trek continues toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt. The landscape becomes increasingly rocky and barren as you enter the alpine desert zone. The trail offers dramatic views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding glaciers while the altitude becomes more noticeable. Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, you have time to rest, organize summit gear, and enjoy an early dinner. Guides provide a detailed briefing for the summit night climb before everyone prepares for a few hours of sleep ahead of the midnight ascent.

Day 6 – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Shortly after midnight, the summit ascent begins under the stars as you slowly climb toward Stella Point and the crater rim. The steep climb is physically demanding, but reaching the summit area brings unforgettable sunrise views over Africa. Continuing to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters marks the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent. After photos and celebration at the summit, the descent begins back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp. Dinner and overnight follow after an extraordinary summit day.

Day 7 – Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

After breakfast, the final descent continues through lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The lower slopes of Kilimanjaro once again reveal dense vegetation, birdlife, and tropical scenery as the altitude gradually decreases. Upon reaching the gate, successful climbers receive their summit certificates before meeting the transfer vehicle. The journey concludes with a drive back to Moshi or Arusha where you can relax, celebrate your achievement, and reflect on the unforgettable experience of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the scenic Machame Route.
