Marangu Route – 6 Days

Day 1 – Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Your Marangu Route – 6 Days adventure begins with a drive to Marangu Gate on the southeastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. After registration and briefing, the trek starts through lush rainforest filled with towering trees, moss-covered vegetation, and colorful birdlife. The trail is gradual and comfortable, making it an ideal introduction to the climb. Along the way, you may spot blue monkeys and colobus monkeys in the forest canopy. After several hours of hiking, you arrive at Mandara Hut for dinner and overnight surrounded by the peaceful mountain forest atmosphere.

Day 2 – Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

After breakfast, the trek continues as the dense rainforest slowly gives way to open moorland landscapes. The scenery changes dramatically with giant groundsels, lobelias, and panoramic views becoming more visible as you gain altitude. The route offers excellent views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding mountain environment. The hike is steady and rewarding, allowing time to enjoy the unique alpine scenery. By afternoon, you arrive at Horombo Hut where you can relax, enjoy dinner, and experience your first true high-altitude overnight on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 3 – Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

This extra acclimatization day is important for improving summit success and helping the body adjust to higher altitude. After breakfast, you take a short hike toward Zebra Rocks or nearby alpine areas while enjoying spectacular views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The walk is relaxed and designed to support acclimatization rather than rapid ascent. Returning to Horombo Hut in the afternoon allows time for rest, hydration, and preparation for the higher sections of the mountain. Dinner and overnight are once again at Horombo Hut surrounded by Kilimanjaro’s unique alpine landscape.

Day 4 – Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Today the route crosses the vast alpine desert known as the Saddle, a dramatic high-altitude plateau located between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Vegetation becomes sparse as the landscape transforms into a rocky and rugged environment shaped by volcanic activity. The hike is longer and more demanding due to the altitude, but the scenery is truly unique and unforgettable. Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, you rest, have an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt. Proper hydration and rest are essential before the most challenging stage of the climb.

Day 5 – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Around midnight, the summit ascent begins under the stars using headlamps as you slowly climb toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. The steep ascent is physically demanding, but reaching the rim brings incredible views over the mountain and surrounding landscapes. From there, the trail continues to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. After celebrating and taking photos at the summit, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight after an unforgettable summit day.

Day 6 – Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

After breakfast, the final descent begins through moorland and rainforest zones toward Marangu Gate. The changing scenery provides a final opportunity to enjoy Kilimanjaro’s diverse landscapes and natural beauty. Upon arrival at the gate, successful climbers receive their summit certificates before meeting the transfer vehicle. The journey concludes with a drive back to Moshi or Arusha where you can relax and celebrate your successful Mount Kilimanjaro adventure.
